In this class we will learn how to define traditional Hollywood genres in movies, by defining similar characteristics and methods of storytelling. As well as talking about film theory and storytelling, we will discuss some famous movies and how they tie into their genre.
Each class will focus on two genres. We will start the class by watching a short clip of a movie and then having a warm-up discussion about it. We will learn more about the respective genre and the history of its creation and what influences it shares with similar movies.
For the final class, students will present their favorite movie scene and talk about it’s genre characteristics as well as what they like about it and how they can relate the Mis-en-scene (things in the frame) to themes or the movie’s story.
There will be no preparation for the classes and we will watch short clips and learn about them. However for the final class students must prepare their favorite scene and perhaps some notes or a paper to help them talk about the scene.
