The goal of this class is to test and improve your English skills by studying short videos or articles and debating them in class. I like challenging my students with questions that require them to really think about their answer and encourage interaction between students.
I intend to use resources in this class that are interesting, but not particularly difficult. I want you to be able to quickly understand the message of the video or article, so you can spend your preparation time putting that message into your own words and developing your own opinions about it. If you prefer a more challenging class with a greater focus on debate, I recommend checking out my Advanced class.
I will provide you with a short (5-10 min) video or article a few days before class and several comprehension questions that will help you fully understand them. The source material can be about a variety of topics, such as history, philosophy, psychology, culture, and modern society. I will also include a few questions that encourage you to develop your own opinions about the topic to prepare you for the debate section of the class.
During class time, we'll spend a good amount of time sharing our understanding of the video/article, before moving on to debate our own opinions. My role will generally be to ask questions, guide the discussion, and encourage debate among students. I can also provide my own insights whenever required, as I'm sure to have my own opinions on whatever we're talking about.
