Summary

In this course, we'll take the opportunity to critically analyze topics that others shy away, or even avoid, talking about. As the people in Taiwan embrace globalization, issues involving sexuality, personal-identity, race and gender equity are salient topics for candid discussion. This course broadens our vocabulary and knowledge to properly articulate our ideas and feelings. We will use "BroadBlogs", maintained by a former colleague of mine in the United States, as the platform for our discourse. Her selections are crisp, engaging, yet dense with offerings that'll probe you to think deeper and may even stimulate you to action. A few examples:

"Why Do Betas Push Theory That Insults Them?"  "Men Watch Porn, Women Read Romance. Why?" "Threesomes Can Be Fun. Or Not,"  "Dominatrix: Worshipped and Objectified."

Format

- Preread and/or select a blog of interested and prepare 'talking points' with prompts and questions.

- Identify unfamiliar or challenging words or concepts in the reading for explanation and/or discussion.

- Engage in active listening, while providing affirmations and thoughtful opinions.

What you can learn from this class

Students will appreciate controversial and taboo topics for analysis and discussion in a safe setting. We'll acquire new and advanced vocabulary in our readings, while refining pronunciation and intonation when sharing. Students will also gain greater insights in their personal lives from a social-psychological perspective.

My experience for the class

I am sociologist trained at University of California, Davis. I've always adopted the “Sociological Imagination” to critically understand how social environments affect individual lives. In the United States, I've taught undergraduate sociology courses and countless secondary school students in California. I recognize the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to ensure holistic learning and I still follow this teaching model in my English language curricula in Taiwan.
