Why is some writing clear and easy to read, while other writing is dense and unclear? Focusing on sentences, we will discover why a sentence is unclear and learn how to improve these sentences to give whoever reads our writing the best chance of understanding our ideas. We will focus on revising and editing sentences in class because when you can see the problems in other’s writing, it becomes easier to see when there are problems in your own.
In this intermediate level course, we will spend more time explaining grammar points and understanding them. The writing projects will be less complicated, and the sentences that we will edit in class time will require an intermediate-level vocabulary.
Each week, I will ask you to do a small writing project before class that focuses on the writing problems we have discussed previously. During class time, we will focus on one problem that occurs frequently in unclear written English. We will spend time learning how to describe the problem, then we will identify and edit this problem in other’s writing, and in your own writing.
The topics of each class include: characters and actions, nominalizations, passive voice and sentence structure.
