Summary

Do you want to become a more clear, direct and confident writer? This class is designed to make you feel more confident and in control of your writing. Focusing on writing at the paragraph level, this class will focus on learning writing skills such as cohesion, coherence, and concision. Rather than learning how to write in one specific style, we will develop writing skills that are relevant in many different styles of writing. In class, we will spend time analysing and editing the writing of others, as when you can notice mistakes in others writing it becomes easier to find your own.

The course materials require at least an intermediate level vocabulary and knowledge of grammar to gain the most benefit from these classes. The writing that we will analyze in class will be a variety of styles – from stories, to academic and business writing, to blogs and emails.

Format

Every second week, there will be a small writing assignment given to you as homework. These assignments are designed to give you ample opportunity to use and refine the skills learnt in the class, as well as allowing everyone to write about a topic that they have chosen. Every other week, there will be optional homework for those students who want extra practice of writing and editing. In class time, we will spend some time discussing each new skill and looking at examples of writing. We will also do writing and editing exercises relevant to each skill. Some weeks, we will also spend time in class editing your own writing assignements with some guidance, as well as giving me time to work with each of you in-depth one-on-one.

My experience for the class

In New Zealand, I completed my Master of Arts in Linguistics. As a linguist, I know how to examine written and spoken language in detail. I have recently won a national award for the quality and clarity of writing in my Master’s thesis. While completing my studies, I taught writing at the University of Otago to both native and non-native English speakers, and worked as an editor for some New Zealand and Australian companies.
