Paul
Paul 來自英國Essex，擁有傳統名校巴斯大學的博士學位，專長是歷史與國際局勢。曾在英國與台灣的大學任教，非常擅長帶領小班的討論。Paul 於2016年加入MDT，舉辦了許多以國際時事為主題的課程。課餘他喜歡閱讀和英國精釀啤酒。
課程簡介
The Economist is not just one of UK’s, but also one of the world’s, top weekly current affairs magazines. It covers news and politics from all over the world, as well as features on science, technology and arts reviews.
This class is your opportunity to discuss either an article chosen for the class, or an article one you have read in that week’s Economist. Whether it’s to debate the issues in the article, to learn more about the background, or to critically examine the article in the light of The Economist’s editorial views, it is a chance to go beyond the article, as well as to practice English and make friends in the process!
What you'll learn
- Practice expressing a variety of views and opinions in English
- Learn more about current affairs in general
- A chance to develop critical thinking about world events
- While some correction may be offered, the focus is on discussion
Why did I create this course?
I’ve taught politics at universities both in the UK and in Taiwan, and teaching is something I’ve always enjoyed. Besides politics and current affairs, I enjoy discussing views and opinions on various other subjects such as history, literature and more. With my classes, I try to create opportunities for people to discuss and critically analyse a variety of topics related to British history and culture, as well as current affairs.
進行方式
Articles will be assigned for the first session. Students will pick articles for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sessions which they will summarize for the class.

Paul的帶法比較像是大學討論課的授課方式，並不會注重於解釋文章或文法，學生對於課堂上要閱讀的文章必須先有充足的認識，才比較能激起討論的火花，對被動接收資訊的學生可能會較為吃力。不過Paul的博學多聞完全能滿足喜歡深度討論議題/吸收世界新知的人，是個很棒的老師，絕對受益良多！！！

Certainly, it's the most challenging and stressful class that I've ever taken at MDT. I acknowledge my English ability (listening and speaking) isn't good enough as my classmates and to catch up with Paul's speed. But I really enjoyed this inability (能力不足) ha. Keep going. This class can help you understand the international affairs given Paul's strength on politics. Reading The Economist also widens your views, but students are supposed to read study materials beforehand so as to participate in the class. This class is best suited for ones who would like to be familiar with International relations!

Paul was so engaged into the discussion that he forgot the time quite often. It’s ok that we had good talk and learned with more in-depth knowledge. So just a minor suggestion that we may just need two articles each week, three is too many that we don’t have enough time to go through all of them. XD

Absolutely wonderful experience attending Paul's classes. I've signed up for a couple of Paul's classes including the Economist and the Western Democracy. Paul is the sort of teacher that passes his passion and thirst of "knowing things for the sake of knowing" to the attendees, which I suppose has positive impact on me. Apart from that, Paul has this sense of humor that makes attendees laugh, which makes the classes more enjoyable when people would think that the classes are somewhat too serious to participate in!

Paul的觀點能刺激討論，也藉機多了解歐洲人/英國人的視角。同學都有一定的英文程度，討論起來比較能真正練到英文。大家各自準備文章，也能因此接觸到不同題目和領域。但如果想要針對議題深入討論，這樣的課程設計和運作方式並不適合：上課時間不夠長、單堂課討論的題目多，而且不是每個人都熟悉當週的議題，討論只能點到為止，不會太深。

Paul有明顯的學者氣質，他對於自己的主題有非常深刻的認識，可以感覺得到Paul有花很多心思在準備課程（幾乎什麼問題都問不倒他!），但作為老師Paul不是那種會自high的上課方式，所以喜不喜歡我覺得見仁見智。如果你對於英國文化很有興趣、想要學一些更深入更精細的知識那我覺得Paul的課很棒，但如果你只是要for fun、講講英文聊聊天，那Paul的課程有點太硬了。另外就是上課的學生中很多是留英派，在某些方面蠻有共同話題。

As a student who is very interested in economics and politics but know little about them, it was a great class for me to listen to classmates' opinions and then discuss with the teacher and classmates. I've learned a lot. The class was intense as students need to read a lot and prepare for discussion in advance. That's what an advanced student would want to , at least it is to me. Thank you Paul!
